Amid wet spell forecast, mercury considerably rises above normal in J&K

Srinagar, Feb 19 (GNS): Amid forecast for scattered to widespread light to moderate rain and snow, mercury settled above sub-zero level across Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, officials said.

A meteorological department official told GNS that while Srinagar recorded a low of 6.7°C against the previous night’s 2.9°C . Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 6.6°C for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 4.4°C against 1.8°C on the previous night and it was 4.5°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 2.1°C against minus 1.4°C on the previous night and it was 6.5°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Kokernag recorded a low of 3.2°C against 1.9°C on the previous night and it was 4.1°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 2.0°C against 0.2°C on the previous night and it was 8.8°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 5.1°C against 1.2°C on the previous night and it was 5.3°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

Jammu recorded a low of 14.1°C against 11.3°C on the previous night. It was 3.6°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 5.8°C (above normal by 6.7°C), Batote 9.6°C (above normal by 4.5°C), Katra 13.6°C (5.5°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 7.3°C (7.0°C above normal).

Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 1.2°C and minus 5.2°C respectively, the official said.

Scattered light rain and thunder over Jammu and Kashmir have been forecast in the next 24 hours and widespread light to moderate rain and snow on February 20.

While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended, Kashmir is under the grip of a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1. (GNS)

Srinagar, Sept 15(GNS): The weatherman on Friday forecast “hot and dry” weather to continue in Jammu and Kashmir for a week ahead.

According to a meteorological department official, light to moderate rain and thunderstorm occurred at scattered places of J&K .

“Except brief spell of morning rain, weather is very likely to remain hot and dry in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours,” the official told GNS, adding, “Day temperature was likely to remain 1-2°C lower than yesterday.”

Regarding the forecast from September 16-22, he said, the weather was mainly going to be hot and dry but a brief spell of rain at isolated to scattered places of J&K cannot be ruled out.

“Due to absence of any strong Western Disturbance or Monsoon Current over J&K, there’s no forecast of major rain for a week, at least.”(GNS)

Budgam duo on Scooty die on spot after being hit by a Sumo

Baramulla, Sep 12, KNT: Two persons, one who was driving the Scooty and the pillion rider died on the spot after being hit by a speeding Sumo in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday.

The mishap took place in Hairath Singhpora area of Pattan.

Sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that a Sumo (JK15-0782) hit a Scooty ( JK04-E4493). The driver of the Scooty and pillion rider died on the spot. They said both were taken to hospital where doctors declared them brought dead.

The deceased have been identified as Faizian Mushtaq Ganai of Chandakot Bala Magam and Riyaz Sajad Mala, a resident of Yagipora Magam.

Police seized the Sumo, arrested driver and registered a case under relevant sections of law. [KNT]
