More than 200 universities to use CUET UG this year vs 90 last year

As per UGC officials, 206 universities are set to conduct admissions through CUET UG this year, a big rise compared to the 90 universities which were on board last year.

According to University Grants Commission (UGC) officials, almost 200 universities have chosen to use the Common University Entrance Exam (CUET) to date for undergraduate programme admission, up from 90 universities the previous year.

Due to the expectation that additional colleges will choose the test for admission, the application period has been extended until March 30.

The 206 universities include 33 state universities and 44 central institutions, including Cotton University in Guwahati, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Delhi, Dr BR Ambedkar School of Economics in Karnataka, and Barkatullah University in Bhopal.

“Number of participating universities in Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) crosses 200 today. It is now 206 including 33 state government universities,” a senior UGC official said.

The exam will be conducted between May 21 and May 31.

The UGC declared in March of last year that all central universities would conduct undergraduate admissions using a common entrance test and not based on Class 12 grades.

By July 2023, universities will have finished the undergraduate (UG) admissions procedure, and the new academic year can start on August 1.

The National Testing Agency had to cancel the exam at several centres during the first administration of the CUET UG, which took place in July of last year. Several students were turned away from centres even though some were advised of the cancellation the night before the exam.

In response to complaints of “sabotage”, the exam has been cancelled at some centres, according to UGC Chair M Jagadesh Kumar.

CUET, the common entrance for undergraduate admissions in all central universities, has surpassed JEE Main, whose average registration is 9 lakh, to become the second-largest entrance exam in the nation with 14.9 lakh registrations.
